Planning Ahead for Post-Quantum Threats

How close is quantum computing to threatening existing cryptosystems? Where do we stand on the development of defenses? And what can we do now? The good news is that the kind of quantum computing that could pose a threat is not close to the required scale and that there are viable post-quantum candidates. The bad news is that quantum computing is about to begin scaling exponentially, and even when new systems are found and standardized, it will take years to deploy them.
