(Panel) Does Fundamental Research Accelerate Innovation? Pt. I: Basic Research

How do we avoid stagnation and foster innovation? Can we promote the freedom to explore and also accept the failure inherent with being on the cutting edge? And does putting an emphasis on fundamental research create an environment that champions discovery, produces more novel solutions, and spurs innovation?

The first of a two-part panel discussion, we explored fundamental research with representatives from three critical areas: industry, government, and academia. Moderated by Paul Rand, host of the University of Chicago’s Big Brains podcast, it was a lively discussion of how to best serve society through the pursuit of ideas

Privacy-Preserving Aggregate Statistics

How can a modern business meet the challenge of gathering necessary aggregate user statistics without being exposed to the personal data of individuals?

This talk presented new cryptographic solutions for safely performing this collection for several motivated statistics, while simultaneously protecting against possible malicious users. Underlying these potential applications is a technology of “zero knowledge on distributed data.”

Probabilistic Estimation of Cardiovascular Bio Digital Twin Parameters

The Cardiovascular Bio Digital Twin project aims to realize precision cardiology though the development of patient-specific digital twins. While the fundamental framework for each twin is a mechanistic model of cardiovascular physiology, an individual patient’s cardiovascular system is a unique and complex interaction of many variables. In order to personalize the broader model for an individual patient, a method of parameter estimation is required, and because most parameter values cannot be directly measured, they must instead be inferred from clinical measurements and other available patient data. To this end, a probabilistic Bayesian inference approach is being developed to leverage a variety of clinical data in estimating patient-specific parameter values.

Integrated Nonlinear Optics for Coherent Information Processing

Efficient solutions to combinatorial optimization problems would widely benefit the areas of drug discovery, machine learning, compressed sensing, scheduling, logistics, circuit design, and communication networks. However, the world currently lacks the available computing resources required to solve hard optimization problems at relevant time and energy costs. NTT Research seeks to disrupt the status quo by developing alternative computing schemes based on coherent networks and integrated photonics technologies.

This talk shared recent progress with lithium niobate photonic integrated circuits and show how recent breakthroughs can change the game for information processing. NTT Research is actively developing photonic circuits based on thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) with orders of magnitude advantage in efficiency compared to traditional nonlinear optical platforms and the promise to scale to large systems for information processing with light.

Using Attribute-Based Encryption (ABE) to Protect Privacy in Surveillance Camera Images

Closed circuit surveillance cameras have become a part of life, and they generate millions of images that can help keep us safer every day. Ironically, they also capture information that can compromise our safety. Ideally, information like names, faces, license plates, and even metadata should be kept confidential. This talk discussed how a team of researchers won the NTT Research Hackathon by successfully using attribute-based encryption to mask this kind of sensitive information in surveillance images. It also explored potential uses beyond security cameras including medical images, regulation, and scanned documents.

Innovation at the Edge - Delivering Real Business Outcomes

In this session we uncovered new infrastructure and operations opportunities fueled by digital innovations. We provided some practical use cases that leverage new emerging edge technologies, such as Edge Computing, IoT, P5G, Computer Vision and Location Tracking. We also showed how we’ve been co-innovating with clients to develop new capabilities to support critical productivity, efficiency and performance needs.

Truth in Sustainability

You can only improve what you can measure. That’s one of the biggest challenges for companies looking to understand their greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and not only make progress toward their goals, but also comply with statutory requirements. Innovations in data capture, analytics and advanced scenario modeling can support these efforts, leading to tracking and improving your environmental footprint.  This session presented practical approaches following a step-by-step maturity roadmap to measuring, managing and improving your GHG emission profile whether you have a single facility or a distributed campus, supply chain or workforce.

IOWN for Sustainable Smart Worlds

NTT announced its IOWN initiative in 2019. This effort aims to achieve carbon neutrality by next-generation network and computing infrastructures with cutting edge photonic technologies. Photonic technologies enable ICT infrastructures higher performance and lower power consumption when compared to electricity-based ICT infrastructures. This presentation introduced IOWN as well as our plans and progress toward more sustainable smart worlds.
