NTT Research and NTT Social Informatics Laboratories to Present Security Research Findings at Eurocrypt 2021

NTT cryptographers co-author 10 papers at 40th annual conference

Sunnyvale, Calif. – October 18, 2021 – NTT Research, Inc., a division of NTT (TYO:9432), today announced that members of its Cryptography & Information Security (CIS) Lab and of the NTT Social Informatics Laboratories co-authored 10 papers that are being presented at Eurocrypt 2021, one of three flagship conferences organized by the International Association for Cryptologic Research (IACR). This year’s event will occur virtually and in person October 18–21 and features 13 sessions, 78 papers and 2 invited talks. This year’s physical event will take place at The Westin Zagreb, in Zagreb, Croatia. The proceedings of Eurocrypt 2021, the 40th Annual International Conference on the Theory and Applications of Cryptographic Techniques, will be published in Springer’s Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series.

A program committee consisting of more than 60 academics evaluated the submissions to Eurocrypt 2021 and grouped the accepted papers into 13 session topics. The program chairs have published a report on the Eurocrypt 2021 review process. The accepted papers associated with NTT cryptographers fell into the following eight sessions: public key cryptography and isogenies; fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) and indistinguishability obfuscation (IO); multiparty computation (MPC); quantum constructions and proofs; post-quantum cryptography; zero knowledge, property-preserving hashing and oblivious random access machine (ORAM); MPC and garbled circuits; and faults, tampering and non-malleability. As at this year’s Crypto 2021 conference, a relatively large number of papers at Eurocrypt 2021 address MPC, which allows parties to calculate outputs without sharing individual inputs.

Directed by NTT Fellow Tatsuaki Okamoto, the NTT Research CIS Lab has assembled a team of world-class cryptographers in the two years since its founding. The NTT Social Informatics Laboratories is a project within NTT Research and Development. The papers co-authored by CIS Lab and NTT Social Informatics Laboratories scientists, (names noted with one and two asterisks, respectively), along with their category and time slot (Eastern U.S.) on the Eurocrypt 2021 schedule, include the following:

The invited speakers to Eurocrypt 2021 are Craig Gentry and Sarah Meiklejohn. Dr. Gentry is currently a Research Fellow at Algorand Foundation, a blockchain startup founded by Silvio Micali. Gentry was named a 2021 IACR Fellow for “breakthrough research on fully homomorphic encryption and other fundamental contributions to cryptography.” Dr. Meiklejohn is Professor of Cryptography and Security in the Department of Computer Science and Faculty of Engineering Science at University College, London. At Eurocrypt 2021, she will deliver a talk titled “An Evolution of Models for Zero-Knowledge Proofs.”

Six affiliated events at Eurocrypt 2021 will take place at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, October 16–17. They include five workshops and one tutorial, covering the topics of artificial intelligence and cryptography (AICrypt) Verifpal software, security and implementation of lightweight cryptography (SILC), quantum techniques for provable security, open problems in Ethereum research, and secure design strategies for intelligent CPUs.

About NTT Research

NTT Research opened its offices in July 2019 as a new Silicon Valley startup to conduct basic research and advance technologies that promote positive change for humankind. Currently, three labs are housed at NTT Research facilities in Sunnyvale: the Physics & Informatics (PHI) Lab, the Cryptography & Information Security (CIS) Lab, and the Medical & Health Informatics (MEI) Lab. The organization aims to upgrade reality in three areas: 1) quantum information, neuroscience and photonics; 2) cryptographic and information security; and 3) medical and health informatics. NTT Research is part of NTT, a global technology and business solutions provider with an annual R&D budget of $3.6 billion.
