Ryan’s work uses optics and photonics to improve the efficiency of computing in ways that facilitate increased speed for complex learning while simultaneously decreasing the necessary energy consumption for such operations.

At the convergence of physics, computer science and neuroscience, NTT Research pursues a powerful, new computer to solve previously unsolvable combinatorial problems. Explorations that were too time-consuming and cost-prohibitive to consider may soon occur in seconds. The process for developing new drugs to address devastating illnesses may take mere hours or days instead of decades – meaning new computing technology could ultimately save millions of lives.
