The Last Watchdog: MY TAKE – Agile cryptography is coming, now that ‘attribute-based encryption’ is ready for prime time

Encryption agility is going to be essential as we move forward with digital transformation.

All of the technical innovation cybersecurity vendors are churning out to deal with ever-expanding cyber risks, at the end of the day, come down to protecting encrypted data. But cryptography historically has been anything but agile; major advances require years, if not decades, of inspired theoretical research.

Now comes something called attribute-based encryption, or ABE, a new approach to encrypting data that holds the potential to infuse agility into how encryption gets done online…

AiThority: NTT Research and Tokyo Institute of Technology Target Two Applications for CIM

NTT Research, Inc., a division of NTT, announced that it has entered into a joint research agreement with Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) to develop applications for the Coherent Ising Machine (CIM). The two targeted applications for the CIM, an information processing platform based on quantum oscillator networks, are compressed sensing and drug discovery, both of which require extremely high levels of processing on existing computers. Two agreements, signed in 2020, call for collaboration between NTT Research’s Physics & Informatics (PHI) Lab and independent research groups in Tokyo Tech’s School of Computing, directed by Drs. Yukata Akiyama and Toru Aonishi…

The Last Watchdog: MY TAKE—Why monetizing data lakes will require applying ‘attribute-based’ access rules to encryption

We’ve barely scratched the surface of applying artificial intelligence and advanced data analytics to the raw data collecting in these gargantuan cloud-storage structures erected by Amazon, Microsoft and Google. But it’s coming, in the form of driverless cars, climate-restoring infrastructure and next-gen healthcare technology.

In order to get there, one big technical hurdle must be surmounted. A new form of agile cryptography must get established in order to robustly preserve privacy and security as all this raw data gets put to commercial use.

I recently had the chance to discuss this with Kei Karasawa, vice president of strategy, and Fang Wu, consultant, at NTT Research, a Silicon Valley-based think tank which is in the thick of deriving the math formulas that will get us there…

Quantum Computing Report: NTT Research to Collaborate with the Tokyo Institute of Technology

Although quantum computers based upon the gate-based approach may get more of the publicity, we feel that one shouldn’t ignore the potential usefulness of other approaches including quantum annealing and Coherent Ising Machines (CIM) that can also take advantage of quantum mechanical phenomena to solve computational problems, particularly in the combinatorial optimization area. We recently covered a review of such activity in Japan and also reported earlier this year on a collaboration between NTT and CalTech to develop very high performance CIM machines to solve complex optimization problems. NTT Research Inc., has entered into a new agreement to perform joint research with the Tokyo Institute of Technology to investigate two specific applications for their CIM machines…

HPCWire: Quantum Research – NTT Research-Tokyo Tech Tackle CIM Application Development

While most of the attention on quantum computing currently tracks gate-based approaches, there has also been steady progress with Coherent Ising Machine (CIM) systems, which are essentially analog systems that seek to leverage quantum effects. It is the approach D-Wave uses. However, unlike the semiconductor-based superconducting technology that D-Wave employs, other technologies including optical approaches to CIM are possible and also rapidly developing. Today, NTT Research and the Tokyo Institute of Technology announced an effort to collaborate on developing applications for CIM systems that highlights recent CIM progress and aspirations…
