Building a Cryptography Lab: 5 Years Later

With every passing day, we are increasingly impacted by technology in ways we could hardly have imagined just a few years prior, compelling the need for improved security and privacy protection. Five years ago, NTT Research opened the Cryptography and Information Security (CIS) Lab as a bold step toward the creation of next-generation technologies in the field of cryptography and the furtherance of attribute-based encryption, homomorphic encryption, and functional encryption.

CIS Lab Director Brent Waters and Senior Scientist Elette Boyle explore what the CIS Lab has become, the ever-changing challenges it engages, and its role as a foundational research lab within the industry.
