NTT OneVision Center, Sunnyvale, CA

Registration for this event is by invitation only.

Attribute-Based Encryption (ABE) was introduced in a 2005 paper co-authored by NTT Research CIS Lab Director Brent Waters. ABE is now approaching commercialization to the global marketplace. Read more about ABE below.

To encourage further development of ABE, NTT Research is hosting an ABE Hackathon at its Sunnyvale, CA headquarters, Sept 28-29. This is an invitation-only event for on-site and virtual participation.

The ABE Hackathon will begin with a virtual one-day ABE workshop on September 16, and continue with two weeks of offsite idea implementation, culminating in a two-day onsite workshop September 28-29.

Participants will have access to:
• ABE libraries and APIs
• Smart Building IoT data
• an Innovative Optical Wireless Network (IOWN) test bed
• a secure implementation environment

NTT executives will evaluate final demonstrations on site. The winner will be recognized in a video presentation at the NTT R&D Forum and NTT Research Upgrade 2023 events and will present their idea live at NTT Research Upgrade 2023.

About Attribute-Based Encryption (ABE):
Compared to the prevailing “all-or-nothing” functional encryption model, ABE is a more finely tuned scheme that grants prescribed access to someone with a set of matching traits. The checking of those attributes happens mathematically, “inside the crypto,” which shifts attention away from servers or software engineering and toward policies and the encryption itself.

NTT Research Upgrade 2021 included a demo of ABE access control to elements in a secure wallet in scenarios involving airport security, transit pass reloading and proof of vaccination. The ABE encryption scheme has global standards support. In 2014, the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) issued a specification for attribute-based access control (ABAC), and the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) published related specifications in 2018, which it updated in 2021.
